Why does my 1996 Saab 6 cyl engine (no turbo) suddenly stop?

On normal start, turning the key, the dash lights come up like a Christmas tree. While driving, the engine stops. Turning the key produces vigorous cranking but no fire. Dash lights are also not on except "faded out" oil light/battery light. After waiting ten minutes or so, it will restart normally.
