Question about sled dogs and the movie Eight Below?

Did those dogs have to become a pack before they made the movie so they would know how to cast their roles? Like when the one dog gave his bird to the alpha dog and all the dogs brought him their birds? Would just training them to act make them do that or did they really have to a pack for it to work out? I hope this isn't a stupid question. I just watched the movie started thinking.
